Despite progress in the early 2000s and increased encouragement, many girls were and continue to be subversively discouraged from the sciences. Over time, my outward confidence and passion for science pulled more and more inward, particularly when seeing how few girls were in robotics class, playing chess after school, or going to math team tournaments. Despite my love of science, one of the subconscious lessons I struggled with at that time was, “If you can’t keep up with the boys, you should probably just stay quiet.”
